Beinlich to Retire at End of 2011
By Cathy Clark
North Canton isn’t losing a beloved leader when Executive Director Paul Beinlich retires from the YMCA, the community is gaining an enthusiastic volunteer who plans to stay actively involved in North Canton. When asked why he decided to retire, Paul answered, “The biggest reason is I wanted to have time to do the special things I’ve always wanted to do. It’s not like I was unhappy or bored. It’s just time to pass the torch.”
Paul loves volunteering and plans to donate his time at St. Paul’s Catholic Church and the North Canton Rotary Club. He would like to be involved in programs for kids and to continue to support the “Character Counts” program.
As for his family, Paul has three sons and three grandsons and he is looking forward to a lot of recreational time with them. Paul’s wife, Nancy, will continue working for a while, so he indicated he’ll have to “bone up on cooking and expanding his repertoire.” Both his mother and mother-in-law are in their 90’s and Paul wants to be able to enjoy longer visits and activities with them. When asked about his leisure time Paul said “ I want more time to play golf. There probably is a trip down South to play golf in my future.”
When Paul reflected on his career,he said he realized very early on that his personal beliefs and the Y’s philosophy meshed perfectly. A workplace philosophy that promotes the well being of the body, mind and spirit is one that Paul whole-heartedly supports. He considers himself to be truly blessed to find his vocation and has embraced it for 40 years.
Paul said what he will miss the most is working with staff members including the staff at the North Canton Y as well as the staff at the entire Central Stark YMCA. Most of the North Canton Y staff has worked with Paul for a number of years in which they have all grown together in experience.
He remarked the members won’t have an opportunity to miss him because he aims to devote a lot of energy toward keeping fit at the Y.
Over the years Paul faced many challenges at the Y but his biggest one was working with difficult personalities. He enjoys the obstacles that different projects present but finds a negative attitude to be the biggest challenge of all.
As to the future of the North Canton YMCA, Paul said, “I feel good about what our team has accomplished and know they will continue to provide the same great services they always have.” Debbie Goldthorpe has been appointed to be the Interim Executive Director. Debbie has worked closely with Paul for almost 15 years and has a wealth of experience in the operation of the Y.
Presently, the YMCA of Central Stark County is handling the resumes being submitted for the position. The Board of the North Canton Y will be involved in interviewing key candidates.
